My Son at a glance

My Son Sanctuary is a group of brick temples built by the Cham people. UNESCO lists it as a World Heritage Site since 1999. The buildings date from the 4th to the 13th century and the sanctuary is mainly associated with the worship of Shiva. It is a Cham site, not a Khmer one, and it is not in the Old Town of Hoi An. You reach it on a separate trip inland.

Most visitors plan a half day including the trip from Hoi An. Parts of the sanctuary were damaged in the war, and you will see ruined walls and a bomb crater among the temple remains. Treat the site with respect and follow the rules posted on site.

Opening hours and dance shows

The ticket portal gives visiting hours of 06:00 to 18:00, with ticket sales from 06:00 to 17:30. No regular weekly closing day is listed. An older notice from 2020 gave a 17:00 sales cutoff, so do not rely on the old figure.

Traditional dance performances are listed at 09:45, 10:30, 11:15, 14:00 and 16:00, and for Group G at 09:00 and 14:45. They depend on the weather, and no dated schedule for your travel day is published. Plan your visit around the time you arrive and ask at the entrance.

The site is outdoors, so bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes. Which temple groups are open on a given day is decided on site, and the rules there come before anything written here.

How to get from Hoi An to My Son

The public tourist bus is currently out of service, so most visitors go with a tour or a private ride.

By tour

A tour is the simplest option. One local operator lists a combined My Son and Marble Mountains day tour of about 11 hours, with an English-speaking guide, pickup in central Hoi An, entrance fees, lunch and one elevator ride included. That is the content of that one product, not a general standard, so compare what each tour includes.

By private car or transfer

One hotel in Hoi An states about 50 minutes to My Son from its location. Treat that as an estimate, not a timetable. Rain and traffic change it, and times differ by starting point.

By public bus

Bus 01DL, which ran from Hoi An to My Son and Dong Giang, has been suspended since September 15, 2026, for six months according to the operator's notice of September 14, 2026. Do not plan around it. See our Da Nang to Hoi An page for other connections in the area.

Planning your visit

Go early if you can. The heat is lower, and the first listed show is at 09:45. Rain can affect the shows. See our Hoi An weather page for monthly rain, and note that October and November are the wettest months in the Da Nang climate norm.

Many tours combine My Son with the Marble Mountains in one long day, and the tours page compares the day trips. If you plan a longer journey, Hue to the north has its own heritage sites, including royal tombs.

The bomb crater visible beside temple remains is a reminder of the site's recent past. Stay on the paths, do not climb on walls and do not photograph people without asking.
